Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Americans (2026): Requirements, Income Proof, Timeline

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa lets Americans live in Spain while working remotely for clients or an employer outside the country. Here is the real 2026 process, with the US tax question answered up front.

What Is Spain's Digital Nomad Visa?

The Digital Nomad Visa (visado para teletrabajadores de carácter internacional) was created under Spain's 2023 Startups Law. It targets people who can work from anywhere and want that anywhere to be Spain. For Americans, it is often the cleanest route because it does not require a Spanish employer, and it pairs with a favorable tax regime.

Who Qualifies as an American Applicant

You generally qualify if you work remotely for non-Spanish clients or an employer, have done so for a while, and can prove stable income. Two profiles cover most Americans:

  • W-2 employees: you need a letter from your employer authorizing remote work from Spain and confirming the relationship predates your application, usually by at least three months.
  • Freelancers and contractors: you show a base of clients outside Spain and a track record, typically through contracts and payment history.

A qualifying degree or three or more years of relevant experience strengthens the file. Only a limited portion of your income may come from Spanish companies.

2026 Income Requirement (With USD Calculator)

The income floor tracks a multiple of Spain's minimum wage (SMI). For 2026 it lands near 2,650 euros per month, roughly 2,850 US dollars, for a single applicant, with an additional amount for each dependent. Consulates look at stability and source, not just a single month.

Indicative 2026 monthly income floors
 Monthly (EUR)Approx (USD)
Single applicantabout 2,650about 2,850
Plus one dependentabout 3,650about 3,950
Plus two dependentsabout 4,000about 4,300

These figures move with the SMI and the exchange rate. Verify the current numbers before you rely on them, or check yours in the income requirement calculator.

Required Documents Checklist for US Applicants

  • Valid US passport with adequate remaining validity
  • Completed national visa application form and the EX-00 residence form
  • Proof of remote work: employer authorization letter or client contracts
  • Proof of income: payslips, bank statements, or invoices for 3 to 6 months
  • Proof of professional qualification or experience
  • FBI background check, apostilled by the US Department of State
  • Private health insurance compliant with Spanish requirements
  • Proof of company registration and that it has operated for at least one year
  • Apostilles and sworn translations for all public documents

Each public document follows the same path: apostille first, then a sworn translation (traducción jurada) into Spanish that also covers the apostille.

Applying From Your US Consulate vs From Inside Spain

You have two routes. Applying at the Spanish consulate for your state of residence issues a one-year visa you activate on arrival. Applying from inside Spain, during a legal tourist stay, grants a three-year residence permit directly, which many find faster and more generous. The right choice depends on your timeline and current location.

Step-by-Step Application Timeline

Our 2025 casework averaged about 47 days from a complete submission to approval.

  1. Confirm eligibility and income: Verify your income source and level against the 2026 threshold and gather 3 to 6 months of proof.
  2. Prepare documents: Collect the employment or client evidence, background check, and insurance, then apostille and sworn-translate them.
  3. File the application: Submit at your US consulate or from inside Spain, with the complete document set and forms.
  4. Receive the decision: Respond to any request for more information, then collect your visa or residence permit.
  5. Complete post-arrival steps: Enter Spain, register on the padrón, and obtain your TIE card and healthcare access.

Tax Implications: Beckham Law, IRS, Totalization

This is where most consultants go quiet. As a US citizen you keep filing a Form 1040 on worldwide income and may owe FBAR (FinCEN 114) and FATCA (Form 8938) reports. On the Spanish side, Digital Nomad Visa holders can elect Beckham Law for a 24% flat rate on Spanish employment income for up to six years. The US-Spain totalization agreement governs which country's social security you pay. We put your tax picture in writing before your packet leaves the consulate. See our US-Spain tax guide and Beckham Law page.

After Approval: TIE, Empadronamiento, Healthcare

Approval is the start, not the finish. On arrival you register on the padrón at your town hall (empadronamiento), book and attend a TIE appointment for your residency card, and activate healthcare. We handle these post-arrival steps too, so you are not navigating Spanish bureaucracy alone in your first weeks. See NIE, TIE and empadronamiento.

Common Rejection Reasons and How We Handle Them

  • Weak income proof: we structure and document income so it reads clearly to a consulate.
  • Non-compliant insurance: we confirm the policy meets the no-copay, full-coverage rule before filing.
  • Translation errors: we use MAEC-certified sworn translators and check the apostille is covered.
  • Employer letter problems: for W-2 applicants, we make sure the letter says exactly what it must.
