Retire in Spain From the USA (2026): Visa, Healthcare, Taxes, Cost

There is no separate retiree visa for Spain. For US retirees the route is the Non-Lucrative Visa, and the move stands or falls on four things: proof of income, compliant healthcare, the US tax reality, and honest cost planning. Here is how each one works in 2026.

Can Americans Retire in Spain?

Spain is one of the most popular destinations for American retirees, and for good reasons: a strong public health system, a lower cost of living than most US metros, direct flights, and a slower pace of life. What trips people up is not desire, it is paperwork and tax. Retiring abroad does not switch off the IRS, and Spain has its own rules on residency, healthcare, and wealth. This guide walks the whole path, from the visa you actually use to what it costs once you are settled.

The Retirement Visa Reality: Non-Lucrative Visa

A quiet plaza cafe in Valencia, a popular city for American retirees in Spain

Spain does not issue a document literally called a retirement visa. The route retirees use is the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), built for people who can support themselves without working in Spain. Pensions, Social Security, dividends, rental income, and savings all count; a salary or active freelance work does not. If you intend to keep working remotely, even part-time, the NLV is the wrong route and the Digital Nomad Visa is the correct one. Choosing the wrong route is the most common and most expensive early mistake.

How Much Money You Need to Show

The NLV financial requirement is set as a multiple of Spain's IPREM index and rises each year, with an additional amount for each family member you bring. Because the number changes annually and consulates want it evidenced in dollar terms, a figure printed in a blog goes stale fast. Use the live threshold and the USD conversion on our Non-Lucrative Visa page and the income requirement calculator instead of trusting an old figure.

Two practical points matter more than the headline number. First, consulates want to see the money as stable, recurring income or clearly available savings, not a one-off balance that appears the week before you apply. Second, how you document Social Security award letters, pension statements, and brokerage balances is often what decides a borderline case. That evidence-building is where preparation pays off.

Healthcare When You Retire in Spain

Medicare does not travel. It will not pay for routine care in Spain, so your US coverage effectively pauses the day you move. For the visa itself you must buy full private Spanish health insurance with no copays and no waiting periods; travel policies and high-deductible plans are rejected. Once you are a legal resident you have more options, including the public system through the convenio especial, a pay-in scheme that gives access to Spanish public healthcare for a monthly fee.

We coordinate compliant cover for the application and, after arrival, healthcare registration so you are not left with a gap between private insurance and the public system. See the healthcare in Spain guide for how the system works day to day.

Social Security, Pensions, and the US-Spain Tax Treaty

You can receive US Social Security while living in Spain; payments continue to your US bank or, in many cases, abroad. The tax question is separate and technical. Under the US-Spain tax treaty, US government pensions and Social Security are generally taxable only by the country paying them, while private pensions and investment income can be taxable in Spain once you are resident. The treaty prevents most double taxation, but it does not make you tax-free, and the result depends on the type of each income stream. This should be modeled before you commit, not discovered on your first Spanish return.

US Taxes Do Not Stop When You Move

The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live. As a retiree in Spain you keep filing a Form 1040, and if your foreign accounts cross the thresholds you also file FBAR and FATCA reports. On the Spanish side, residents with foreign assets over the limits must file Modelo 720, a declaration many Americans miss with costly consequences. High-net-worth retirees should also read up on Spain's wealth tax, which varies by region. None of this should stop a well-planned move; it simply has to be planned.

What It Actually Costs to Retire in Spain

For most American retirees, day-to-day life in Spain costs less than in a comparable US city, with the biggest savings in housing, healthcare, and eating out. The offsets are private insurance during the NLV years, the cost of moving, and any Spanish tax on investment income. Our cost of living in Spain guide breaks down real numbers by city, and best places to live in Spain compares Valencia, Madrid, Malaga, and others on cost, community, and climate.

From Visa to Permanent Residency and Citizenship

The Non-Lucrative Visa is renewable and builds toward permanence. After five years of legal residence you can apply for long-term (permanent) residency, and after ten years you may qualify for Spanish citizenship, sooner for some nationalities. A spouse and dependents can be included from the start with additional financial proof. Retiring in Spain is therefore not a temporary arrangement; for many it is the first step toward staying for good.

A Realistic Timeline

From decision to residence, plan for several months. Gathering and apostilling US documents takes weeks and depends on your state; the consulate then books an appointment and decides; and after you arrive you complete the padron and NIE, TIE, and empadronamiento steps. The timeline estimator gives a range based on where you are applying from.

How We Handle a Retirement Move

As a Valencia colegiada gestora administrativa, Elena runs a retirement move as one accountable process: confirming the Non-Lucrative Visa budget in USD, building the financial evidence consulates accept, arranging compliant health cover, and coordinating the US tax interaction so Social Security and pensions are handled correctly. After approval, she manages the padron, TIE, banking, and healthcare registration so you land with residency in order rather than a to-do list.
